Cubs Vs. Antioch Dawgs
Cubs 11 Antioch 0The Antioch Dawgs were a collection of 9 and 10 year old
players, so the Cubs had a fun outing. While the Cubs also are a
collection of 9 and 10 year olds, we have a much larger community to pull kids
from. If we were to The game was good for the Cubs though. In the last game against Dug Gap we took swings at a lot of pitches out of the strike zone (Dug Gap walked seven as it was). It is very difficult to get a clean base hit on balls out of the strike zone. We encourage players to "swing at anything close" with two strikes, but we do not want them hacking at every pitch before two strikes. In this game, they were forced to wait on hittable pitches. At the beginning of the game, the only outs that were made were by players that swung at the first pitch they saw. While the game was very painful to watch, I think we learned something. We would like to see our players look at one pitch to get an idea of how fast the pitcher is and how to time their swing. We DO NOT send our player up to the plate looking for walks. In the Dug Gap game the pitcher threw 43 pitches in the first inning 21 pitches in the 2nd inning, 12 pitches in the 3rd inning. If we had been more patient, it would been a very different game. Drew Guffey led off the game pitching and walked the first batter. The second batter struck out and the third batter lined a hard hit ball to right field. Paxton Bennett chased down the ball and made a great thrown to second base to get a tag out of the hitter who was trying to advance to second base. Blake Ownbey made a great tag to get the second out. Drew struck out the last batter to strand the runner at third base. Drew Guffey Struck out two in the inning. Paxton Bennett made a great throw from right field to second base to get a tag-out at second base. Cubs 0 Dawgs 0 Logan Hilton Led off the game for the Cubs with a home run to right field. This would be our only run of the inning. The Dawgs third baseman made two terrific plays on hard hit ground balls by Blake Ownbey and Jackson Bell to throw them out at first base. Clay Phillips followed with a single and Paxton Bennett walked. A strikeout ended the first inning. Logan Hilton hit a Home run and scored in the inning Cubs 1 Dawgs 0 Drew came back out to pitch in the third to get a ground out on a two-strike pitch. It was kind of a odd 1-6-3 play, because the ball hit Drew's glove and was slowed down. Blake picked it up and made a great play to barely beat the runner. Drew struck out the next batter, then allowed a single, before Logan received an unassisted out on a ground ball to first. Drew Struck out one in the inning. Blake made a great play on a slow grounder to short for a put-out at first. Logan fielded a grounder fro an unassisted out at first to end the inning. Cubs 1 Dawgs 0 In the Cubs second inning Henson Gibbs lead off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Henson was followed by 5 successive walks by Trey Hasty, Chip Brown, Dakota Ware, Logan Hilton, and Blake Ownbey. Dakota, Logan, and Blake each picked up RBI's on the Walks. Jackson Bell then stepped up to the plate and hammered the ball, uh-gin, for a grand slam. (Clay's bat has some kind of magic in it. maybe we need to check it for cork). This was Jackson's first home run of the year and the first grand slam of his life. I hope he will always remember it. It may never happen again. The inning ended due to the five-run rule on Jackson's slam. Trey Hasty, Chip Brown, Dakota Ware, Logan Hilton, and Blake Ownbey each scored in the inning. Jackson Bell had a grand slam. Logan Hilton and Blake Ownbey each had RBI's Cubs 6 Dawgs 0 Drew pitched again in the third and struck out all three batters. We had planned to put Henson in the game during this inning, but Drew had missed his time in the pitching rotation against Dug Gap because his arm was sore. Cubs 6 Dawgs 0 In the Cubs third, Clay Phillips led off the inning with a double to left field. Paxton Bennett followed with a single to left center and Drew Guffey followed with a walk. Henson Gibbs grounded out to the third baseman (4-3) and collected an RBI to drive in Clay. Chip Brown walked to score Paxton, then Dakota Ware was hit by yet another pitch to score Drew. Logan Hilton singled to right field to score Chip. Blake walked, then Jackson singled again to score Dakota and pick up his 5th RBI of the game and end the inning due to the five-run rule. Clay Phillips, Paxton Bennett, Drew Guffey, Chip Brown, and Dakota Ware each scored in the inning. Logan Hilton, Blake Ownbey, Jackson Bell, and Henson Gibbs each got RBI's Logan Hilton, Jackson Bell, Clay Phillips each got base hits in the inning. Cubs 11 Dawgs 0 Henson came into the game to pitch in the fourth and was throwing heat to the heart of their order. He struck out the first batter, then walked the next batter. He struck out the third batter, and then walked the fourth batter. Henson ended the game on a strike-out. Final Score Cubs 11 Dawgs 0
