In our first game of 2007, Chip equaled his 2006 hit total, got his first career RBI, and first game winning hit.  Chip continues to progress and we are very pleased with his improvement.  Chip plays right field, but with our pitchers, right field is the most important outfield position.  Our pitchers throw hard, and most balls are hit to the right side.  Chip has made a number of very fine plays and throws back to the infield quickly to prevent runners from advancing.  In our first game of the season, Chip made an excellent catch and a superb throw back to the infield and we almost caught a runner at the plate because of his strong throw.  At this age, most youth coaches place their weaker players in right field.  The Cubs coaches believe the right field position is the most important because more balls are hit to right field than any other outfield position.  As long as Chip continues to block the ball with his body and make quick, strong throws back to the infield, he will continue to be one of the Cubs hidden assets.

Chip is swinging the bat much better this year.  If we can improve his footwork, he will become a very dangerous hitter for us.  He has a lot of upper body power, but we need to keep his feet planted.  This is where he loses his power.  With the three-run triple he got in our first game of 2007, he kept his feet stationary and really walloped the ball.  This is what we expect from Chip.  Once he realizes he has more skill than most of the other players on the Cubs, and works to develop these skills, he will be the final piece in the puzzle.  Chip continues to work on hand-speed at the plate.  Hand-speed is the secret to base hits.  In 2006, Chip simply moved his bat slowly through the strike zone.  This year he is beginning to develop bat speed (hand speed) and he should get many more game winning RBI's for us this year.
