Cubs vs. Dug Gap Red Rangers

Cubs 5    Red Rangers 16

The Dug Gap game was our first loss of the year and while two protests were filed for Illegal Player Participation and Non Player Participation, neither protest was allowed: although current league rules will be changed to eliminate any further ambiguities.

Both filing the protest and declining the protests were the proper procedure for the good of Whitfield County Athletics and the children involved.  We were pleased with the outcome. Our intent was not to remove any player from their current team, but in the future, all players should play within the current school district where they reside and all players should play in each game.  There are city athletic programs and select team options for players who choose not to play within their district. These rules have been established for specific reasons.

While the score of the Dug Gap game looked somewhat lop-sided, the game actually came down to a lot of Cubs fielding errors.  From routine ground balls to dropped fly balls to missed line drives to misjudged fly balls, all figured significantly in the final score.

During the Dug Gap game, all Cubs scoring was completed in the first inning. Logan Hilton led off the game with a walk, then Blake Ownbey followed with a single to right.  Jackson Bell followed with another single.  After a strikeout, Paxton Bennett walked and Drew Guffey singled.  After another strikeout for the second out of the inning.  Trey Hasty, Chip Brown, and Dakota Ware each walked to complete our five-run first inning.

Blake Ownbey, Jackson Bell, and Drew Guffey each singled in the inning.

Their sixth batter walked and their seventh batter singled to drive in their last run of the inning.  Their final batter lined out to first for the final out of the inning.

In the Red Rangers second inning, the wheels began to fall off for the Cubs and we started making numerous fielding errors.  A walk, a hit batsmen, and a swinging bunt rattled the Cubs.  The Rangers scored 5-runs after sending only 6 batters to the plate.  The Cubs surrendered only three hit balls in the inning to yield the 5-runs with no outs. All hits with the exception of the swinging bunt were fielding errors by our infield.

In the Cubs third inning, we were quickly out of the inning with three strikeouts.

Logan Hilton went in to pitch for Jackson in the 3rd inning and surrendered two quick hits on missed ground balls and a walk.  Blake Ownbey made a spectacular play on a ground ball to short in which he made a stumbling catch and tag of the runner who was passing him.  Their next batter hit fly ball to center field which was dropped, and the last batter cleared the bases with a home run to left field.  This ball was actually misjudged by our fielder and went over his head for a home run.

In the Cubs fourth, Chip Brown led off the inning with a single to center field.  Dakota Ware then hit a rocket line drive to third base.  The Rangers third baseman made an excellent play in making the diving catch and throwing to first to double off Chip at first base.   Logan Hilton single and Blake Ownbey singled for his third base hit of the game.  The Cubs fourth ended with a strikeout.

Cubs 5    Red Rangers 13

The Rangers needed only 3-runs to put the game out of each in their half of the fourth.  Their first two batters walked and their third batter struck out. Their next three batters singled to score their final three runs and end the game.

In the overall scope of the season, winning or losing the Dug Gap game means nothing, since the County Championship is awarded to the end-of-the season tournament champion. All teams are invited to participate in this tournament, so each regular season game is simply preparation. Our philosophy has always been that our Cubs learn something from every game we play.  Hopefully, this preparation will pay off when tournament time rolls around.
