Red Wings 4

This was simply a fun game.  Drew Guffey did another fine job of pitching.  While we normally allow the starting pitcher to go three innings, we saw an opportunity to allow some boys who ask if they can pitch (in every game) the opportunity to see what pitching is like.  The big surprise was how well Ethan Hayes pitched.  We knew at some point, Ethan would develop into a pitcher.  He has a very strong arm and has Nolan Ryan-type velocity, but we were waiting on his throwing accuracy to develop.  Ethan came into the game with two runs in, the bases loaded, and no outs. He worked his way out of the jam, allowing only two runs charged to Blake and allowing only one base runner.

As his parents continue to work with him between practices, I think he will develop into our fourth pitcher.  No other county team can throw four pitchers at a team like the Cubs. Once Ethan gains accuracy, he will knock the bat out of opposing players hands.

While Ethan probably isn't quite ready to go out there and pitch three innings, we plan to use him in the future, and continue to develop his accuracy in game situations.  By summer league or by next Spring, Ethan may be ready to toe the rubber against the very best teams and stand toe-to-toe with their best pitchers.

We could not have asked for a better performance from Drew Guffey.  He threw to 8 batters and struck out 6 in two innings.  He did this with only 41 pitches.  Drew held the Red Wings scoreless.  If it were not for his performance, we would not have been able to allow these other boys the opportunity to pitch.

We also shook up our infield.  This allowed Jackson Bell to return to third base, where he is very comfortable.  Drew Guffey went to shortstop, and it was obvious he understands all of the duties of the position.  I would like for all of our infielders to learn how to play every position in the infield, because we are very versatile.  Learning the responsibilities of each position teaches players to understand where every player "should" be in every game situation.  For example, if the third baseman fields a ground ball with a runner on first, he "knows" the second baseman should be on the bag to cover his he throw.  He also should know that the shortstop is covering the third base bag for him.  If everyone is where they should be and each player knows where every other player should be, it allows us to fine-tune our game as the year progresses or when next year arrives.

We only had one base-running mistake, as well, but it worked in our favor.  Ethan Neal in his "excitement" did not put on the brakes at second base and stretched his hit to third.  Against a better team, he would probably have been thrown out at third base.

While this Friday's game will be tough (Dug Gap Red Hots), the rest of our schedule may allow us to have a little more fun in allowing players to play other positions.  This game was so much fun, I actually lost track of the six-run lead and pleaded with the umpire that the Red Wings could still tie the game and should get another at-bat.  I was actually more excited about getting another opportunity in the field than I was about the six-run lead.
