Westside Cubs Vs. Georgia Spiders

The Spider game was our first scrimmage of the year and it was designed to give us an assessment of the players we have in a game-type situation.  The Spiders are a Select Travel Team and they try to pull the best players from Whitfield, Gordon, Rome, and Bartow Counties.  Both Logan and Henson play for the Spiders during weekend tournaments.  The Cubs will not face a more talented team in Rec ball this year.  We did not keep score but I'm sure the Spiders will have the final score and stats if any parent is interested.  I did keep batting stats on the Cubs, but it wasn't pretty with all the K's.

Their pitchers throw strikes, their batters each get 2 hours per week in an indoor batting cage, and it was a good lesson in humility for our Cubs.  We learned alot about the players we have and where we need to spend more time teaching.

Every batter went to the plate looking for a walk, it seems, and the Spiders threw strikes.  We have to be more aggressive in hitting the ball.  We are not concerned though, because hitting always lags behind pitching early in the season.  We will begin to schedule more batting cage days though to get more swings in.  Many of these cage days will be voluntary, but we will be able to see who wants to work hard to improve by who attends these extra sessions.

There were a number of surprises.

  • Trey Hasty hit the ball very well and made a great catch in hustling to get to a ball in foul territory for a pop fly out.  Trey looks like our most improved player from last year.  If we can get him to squeeze more thrown balls and become more mobile in moving off the bag at first on wide throws, he will become a good third baseman.
  • Jackson Bell hit and pitched very well which is what we've come to expect.  In his first at-bat he launched a fly to center field for a double and with the exception of the out-of-the park homerun to Thad in the first inning, he pitched flawlessly in the first inning.  In the second, he became a little more erratic with the strike zone, but we may need to examine his grip.  He may be palming the ball which is causing a late release and causing short pitches.
  • Ryan Townsend got a good base hit and made a solid fielding play at second base for a ground out.  Ryan will move up in the batting order and get a longer look at some infield positions.
  • Robert lee Nichols is showing a lot of speed in right field and he almost caught up to an unreachable foul ball down the right field line.  We may give Robert a look at left field also, even though left field is a position that doesn't get much action on the Cubs.
  • Dakota Ware misjudged one fly ball in left field, but later made a great play to save a run on an overthrown ball to shortstop.
  • Paxton Bennett did an outstanding job catching.  As he has more time behind the plate he will continue to improve and make a fine catcher. With the loss of Henson, we need him.  Paxton can make the difference between a good year and an average year.

On disappointment was the number of balls that got behind our outfielders, a cardinal sin.  Chip and Dakota have always excelled in this area.  If a ball is hit to either of them, our coaches are confident that they will stop the ball and get it back to the infield quickly

The biggest improvement for the Cubs will be between this scrimmage game and our next game or scrimmage game.  Players will begin to settle in at positions and become comfortable with the responsibilities of these positions.  We will probably settle in with 6 outfielders who rotate in/out and 7 infielders who rotate in/out with a couple of players who may play both infield and outfield.

The game was just as big for our coaches in trying to keep organized as to who went into the game and who came out.  As you might imagine, it can get fairly confusing with 13 boys coming to you all at once asking if their going back in in the next inning; especially when you can't remember who was out in the field in the last inning.  We were moving so many boys around to give them a look at different positions that it was hard to keep track of who was in the dugout.
