Jackson is one of our best pitchers when he is hot.  He threw for more innings than of our pitchers last year and we always save him for the toughest teams.  He and Logan tied for the team lead in strikeouts in 2006 with 36 and only one walk separated them.  Jackson gave up the fewest hits and fewest earned runs of any pitcher. Jackson allowed less than one run per inning, which is unheard of at this age. When he throws strikes, he is almost unhittable and he is only 9 years old.  Since he faces the best teams, our batters face the best pitchers, so we always need a pitcher that limits opponents runs.  The only runs that score on Jackson are walks that move around the bases on passed balls.  This will be our objective in working with Jackson this year.  We must have him concentrate on the third base runner and when a ball passes the catcher, he must sprint to the plate to stop runs from scoring.  If we can limit these cheap runs, he will become more difficult to score runs against.

As a batter, Jackson starts slowly each year and this year has been no exception.  During the early Bird tournament Jackson did not swing the bat so well.  However, he looked much better in our first game and looked like an All-star in our second game.  Jackson got only 6 hits last year but already has 5 after our 3rd game of this year.  Jackson is beginning to swing the bat with more authority this year and with more velocity.  This should reduce the number of strikeouts and produce more contact base hits.

We also have moved Jackson from third base to second base this year.  In the past, we wanted to take advantage of Jackson's arm and Glove at third base, but with our pitchers, very few balls are hit to third base.  Moving Jackson to second better utilizes his glove and keeps his mind in the game, since third base can be a lonely position without action.  This move already has paid dividends with Jackson making several outstanding plays at second base.  We will continue to work with Jackson to ensure he understands the second baseman's responsibilities.

As long as Jackson continues to charge the ball, field with two hands, make good throws, and carry out the responsibilities of second base as he has done, it will be very difficult for another player to replace him at second base.
