Cubs Vs New Hope Giants
Cubs 12 - New Hope Giants 1 Our Cubs started
slowly again in the first inning against New Hope. The New Hope pitcher
was throwing much more slowly than our tired old coaches, so it took the boys an
inning or so to get their timing adjusted on their swings. When they did,
we were very pleased with the result. It In the first inning, Henson Gibbs led off our Cubs base runners with a single to left field. He advanced on stolen bases and Clay Phillips came through to drive in Henson with two outs on a hard hit ball to center field. The inning ended on a close call at the plate on an overthrow of third base. Henson Gibbs scored our lone run in the first inning Cubs 1 Giants 0 Logan Hilton started the game pitching for the Cubs and struck out the first batter. The second batter walked and the third batter popped out to Clay Phillips at first base. Clay made a nice play in holding on to the ball. Clay played a great game at first base, a position he is only now learning. The play was made behind first base for the second out. Logan struck out the third batter to end the Giants 1st inning. There were two Giants strikeouts in the inning. Cubs 1 Giants 0 In the Cubs second inning, Drew Guffey led off the inning with a single to right. Jackson Bell then hammered the ball to right center for another single. Paxton Bennett followed Jackson's single with his first single of the night. After two Cubs strike-outs, Trey Hasty stepped to the plate and hit a rocket to left field. In Trey's excitement of hitting the ball so hard, and getting his first base hit of the year, he forgot to step on first base and was called back to touch the base. The ball was hit so hard, it should have been a double and could have been a triple, but next time he will make sure to step on each base. However, with the first base hit, there is always room for a little excitement. After Trey's hit, Logan Hilton singled to right field. Blake Ownbey then singled to score both Trey and Logan and ended the inning due to the five-run rule. Drew Guffey, Jackson Bell, Paxton Bennett, Trey Hasty, and Logan Hilton each scored in the Cubs second inning. Cubs 6 Giants 0 In the Giants 2nd inning, Logan Hilton struck out the first batter and walked the second batter. The third batter reached on a base hit and the 4th batter hit a come-backer to Logan at the mound. Logan made the play at first base for the second out. This advanced the runners to second and third. Their next batter was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded. In the last practice, we had worked on a situation where the 3rd base runner advances halfway down the line and then steals home. The Giants did this and we should have gotten the out, but we dropped the ball. The boys listened during practice and did exactly as Brian taught them. The play was performed to perfection, we simply dropped the ball. The final batter struck out to end the inning. There were two Giants strike outs in the inning. Cubs 6 Giants 1 In the Cubs 3rd inning, Our first two batters hit quickly into our first two outs of the inning. Drew Guffey walked and was followed by Jackson Bell's second hit of the night. Paxton Bennett then lined a Home run in the gap between right and center and cleared the bases for three RBI's. Dakota Ware walked and then Chip Brown was hit by a pitch. Trey Hasty walked for his second time on base in the game, Logan Hilton singled to right field to drive in Dakota Ware and Chip Brown. Jackson Bell and Logan Hilton got hits in the inning. Drew Guffey, Jackson Bell, Paxton Bennett, Dakota Ware, and Chip Brown each scored to help us reach our 5-run maximum. Cubs 11 Giants 1 In the Giants third, we brought Drew Guffey in to pitch. After hitting the first batter, the second batter flew out to Henson Gibbs at third base. Henson did a good job of finding the first base runner after the catch, and holding him to first. The third batter hit a dying liner back to Drew Guffey at the mound and Drew almost made a spectacular catch. He recovered quickly and got the out on a throw to Logan at first base. Drew then struck out the final batter to end the Giants third inning. Drew Struck out one batter in the inning. Cubs 11 Giants 1 In the Cubs final at-bat, Blake Ownbey led off the inning with a walk. Henson Gibbs popped out to the shortstop and then doubled Blake off at first. Blake had forgotten that there were less than two outs. Clay Phillips stepped up to the plate and hit his first home run of the regular season to end the game based on the 11-run score spread. Clay Phillips hit a home run in the inning Final Score - Cubs 12 Giants 1 I really wish we had the opportunity to play one more inning. We had already given instructions for the boys to play the positions (in the field) they wanted to play when we went back on the field. The dug-out was buzzing like a swap-meet. I heard at least one Cub say "I'll trade you a Blue eyes Pokeyman Dragon (apparently a very valuable commodity) for second base" We will rarely get these opportunities. Blake would finally get to play first, Drew wanted to play center field, Logan wanted shortstop, Trey had his eyes on third base. Dakota and Paxton were still in the middle of very serious negotiations for second base when Clay hit the ball. Hopefully, we will get another chance later in the year. BattingLogan Hilton 2 for 3, 1 Run scored, 2 RBI's Blake Ownbey 1 for 2 Henson Gibbs 1 for 3 Clay Phillips 2 for 3 1 runs scored, 2 RBI's Drew Guffey 1 for 2, 2 runs scored Jackson Bell 2 for 2, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI Paxton Bennett 2 for 2, 2 runs scored, HR, 3 RBI's Dakota Ware 0 for 1, run scored Chip Brown 0 for 1, 1 run scored Trey Hasty 1 for 1, 1 RBI, 1 Run Scored
