Paxton was one of the Cubs best acquisitions for the 2007 season.  He also is making more progress, more quickly than any other Cub. When he joined the Cubs he had tons of raw talent; the Cubs coaches are simply working to develop these skills so that he learns the proper technique for each baseball skill. Once he develops good habits, he could easily be one of our best players.  Youth baseball is not a game that you can simply pick up a glove once or twice weekly and expect to keep pace with other players who work hard between games and practices.

At the beginning of Spring training, Paxton struggled at the plate.  He had good form, a beautiful swing, and excellent power.  However, once kid pitch began, he struggled with timing and making good judgments regarding the strike zone.  He was 0 for 12 during the Early bird tournament and he was missing each pitch, badly.  During our first two games, he began making contact and is beginning to climb in our batting line-up. If not for a very bad call on a ground-out, Paxton could be batting 1000.  If he continues to work at home, between practices and games, he could easily become a 3, 4 or 5 hitter for the Cubs.  Paxton could be another of those missing puzzle pieces.

Defensively, Paxton has been inserted into Ethan Neal's old center field position.  The loss of Ethan was difficult for the Cubs, but Paxton could fill this major hole and benefit the entire Cubs team.  Once Paxton develops good habits (i.e., using two hands to field all hit and thrown balls and blocking the ball with his body, et.al.), he could compete for an infield position.  We continue to evaluate Paxton at each practice.  Developing good habits is simply a matter of concentrating of proper habits, practicing these habits, and putting these habits into effect in game situations.

Paxton, probably as much as any other player, could contribute more to our goal of winning a County Championship, if he works hard on skill development.
