Tunnel Hill Titans vs. Westside Cubs

May 23, 2006

Westside Cubs 10 - Tunnel Hill Titans 2

In the first game against Tunnel Hill during preseason, the Cubs barely squeaked out an 8-7 win.  This weeks game counts in the standings, however.  It is Jackson's turn in the pitching rotation, with Logan due to come in to pitch in the 3rd or 4th inning.  If Logan and Jackson can hold them and our bats come alive, we will give Ethan Hayes another shot at pitching in the 4th inning.  If the game is close, Jackson will pitch 2-3 innings and Logan will finish the game.

In our final game against Tunnel Hill for the year, Jackson Bell and Ethan Hayes threw a combined 10-2, no-hitter.  Cubs pitching surrendered 6 walks, which accounted for both Tunnel Hill Runs.

During the Cubs half of the first inning, Logan Hilton lead off the game with a double and was followed by Blake Ownbey with a walk.  Drew Guffey then drove in both Logan and Blake with a triple to pick up two RBI's.  Drew was followed by Ethan Hayes, Clay Phillips, and Ethan Neal who each walked.  Drew, Clay, and Ethan Hayes each scored on wild pitches.

Logan Hilton, Blake Ownbey, Drew Guffey, Ethan Hayes, and Clay Phillips scored in the top of the first.  Ethan Neal was left stranded due to the five-run rule.

Cubs 5 - Titans 0

In the bottom of the first, Jackson Bell went in to pitch.  He was struggling with the portable pitching mound.  After walking the first batter and striking out the second batter.  Jackson walked the next two batters to load the bases.  One each batter, Jackson immediately got an 0-2 (two strike count) and then walked the batter.  Jackson has learned that by getting the first-pitch strike, the batter will help, in most cases, by swinging at pitches outside the strike-zone.  However the Tunnel Hill batters were not swinging.

Jackson battled back to strike out the final two batters thus preventing any runs from scoring.

The Cubs were held scoreless in the 2nd inning on a single by Logan Hilton and walks by Dakota Ware and Chip Brown.

Jackson came in for the second inning and struck out the side on 14 pitches.  With a five-run lead and their pitcher struggling, we made the decision to replace Jackson with Ethan Hayes in the third inning to evaluate how Ethan has been progressing.

In the Cubs, third inning we scored five-runs on a single by Blake Ownbey and a double by Clay Phillips.  The Cubs had 7 walks in the inning.

Drew Guffey, Ethan Hayes, Clay Phillips, Ethan Hayes, and Jackson Bell each scored in the inning.

Cubs 10 - Titans 0

In the last inning, Ethan walked the first three batters and allowed two runs. The game was called due to the time-limit. The adjustment to pitching from a mound was substantial for our two pitchers.  Actually, we should pitch from a mound in each game.  Playing on softball fields is a fact of life for our boys, but the cost of these portable pitching mounds is exorbitant.
