Cubs vs Varnell Braves
Cubs 11 Braves 8 The Varnell Braves game was our first game of the year, and we
were unsure whether we were ready or not. All of the other teams
throughout the county were very worried about Varnell because the rumor was that
all
the better players had ended up on the Braves. While I'm sure other
communities feel the same way about the Cubs, we didn't actually plan for this
to happen The Cubs had been under alot of pressure during Spring training from coaches, so I'm sure their confidence level was pretty low. However, they played a great game and each player should be proud of how they played. The Cubs led off the game hitting the ball, which is something we have stressed all Spring. We want them to be aggressive at the plate. Logan Hilton led of the game with a triple to right field and was driven home by a single from Blake Ownbey. Blake then score on a groundout by Henson Gibbs, who got his first RBI of the season. Both Clay Phillips and Jackson Bell singled in the first, but both were left stranded. Cubs 2 Braves 0 Jackson Bell started the game pitching and was completely over powering. Jackson surrendered one run on two walks. The runners advanced on passed balls. Jackson struck out two and did not allow a hit. Logan Hilton made a sparkling play on a grounder at 1st base to get the second out. Jackson struck out the first of the inning to start the game, and fourth batter of the inning to end the inning. Cubs 2 Braves 1 In the second inning the Cubbies scored 5 runs and the inning was ended by the 5-run rule. Paxton Bennett led off with a single (his first official hits as a Cub), Trey Hasty reached on catchers Interference, when his bat hit the catchers glove. Logan Hilton then doubled to right, to drive in two runs. Henson Gibbs then laid down the most beautiful sacrifice bunt you will ever see in 10 year old baseball to advance Logan to third. Clay singled to drive in Logan and Clay scored on passed balls to end the inning. Paxton Bennett, Trey Hasty, Logan Hilton, Blake Ownbey, and Clay Phillips each scored in the inning. Cubs 7 Braves 1 In the Braves second inning, Jackson picked up where he left off in the first striking out two of four batters he faced, and Jackson did not allow a hit. The lone run came on a walk and 3 passed balls. Henson made another superb play on a grounder at 2nd base and throw to first for the final out of the inning. Cubs 7 Braves 2 In the Cubs 3rd inning, Drew Guffey led off the inning with a single and was followed by three walks by Jackson, Dakota Ware, and Paxton. Chip Brown then stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and lined the second pitch over the second baseman's head for a 3-RBI triple. This probably would have been a Grand Slam had it not been for the coaches holding Chip and preventing him from advancing quickly enough. This triple turned out to be the difference in the game. Jackson Bell, Dakota Ware, and Paxton Bennett each scored the last three runs which turned out to be the winning runs. Cubs 11 Braves 2 Logan came in to pitch in the 3rd struck out 2, walked one and allowed 1 run on passed balls. Cubs 11 Braves 3 The Cubs were retired in order in the 4th on 3 K's Cubs 11 Braves 3 In the Braves 4th, Logan retired the side on a groundout and 2 k's Cubs 11 Braves 3 The Cubs were again retired in order in the 5th with a ground out by Paxton Bennett on a bad Call (he was actually safe) and two K's. This would have been Paxton's second hit of the game. Cubs 11 Braves 3 The wheels fell off in the 5th for the Cubs, but with an 8 run lead, the game was statistically over before it began. We actually allowed the braves 6 outs in the inning by dropping easy tosses to first base, easy pop-ups to the infield and numerous other mental errors. Logan walked the first batter, then struck out the next batter. An easy grounder to the pitcher was dropped by the first baseman and the next batter was struck out for the second out. Instead of "game over", we allowed 5 runs after we had two outs. However, this was our first game and we were very pleased with how the Cubbies played. Final Score Cubs 11 Braves 8 Jackson did not allow a hit. Logan allowed one hit in the third to Hunter Nelson (that big kid that looked like he should be driving to the park) and two hits in the last inning. Hunter played for us in Last summer's Murray league and he is a great kid. Our pitching looked great. Our hitting looked good, but may be dependent on the quality of pitching we face. Our next game is against Pleasant Grove this Friday. We have Concession stand duty Friday night Batting
