Cubs Vs. Varnell Reds
Cubs 8 Varnell Reds 5 The Reds game was a real nail biter and I wish every game we
played was this close. It makes playing the game a lot more enjoyable.
Henson Gibbs started his The game was called because of the time limit and this was unfortunate since the rain delay used up some of our playing time. While Logan Hilton was throwing strikes with a lot of velocity in the last inning and probably could have retired their next few batters with ease, we welcome every opportunity to play every inning we can. Since the Cubs had not seen their pitchers, we again instructed the Cubs to look at one pitch before swinging. This helps them get an idea for the timing of their swing. All outs in the game as a result of hit balls were the result of players that went after the first pitch. We do not send our Cubs up to the plate looking for walks. We send them to the plate looking for base hits. A game with 8 walks per inning is very dull and not much fun to play. Being able to evaluate the speed and pitching motion of each pitcher is critical in getting base hits, and it allows other Cubs players in the dugout to see how the pitcher is throwing. Henson Gibbs started the game as pitcher and was a little shaky before he found his feet. In this case, until he lost his feet, because with each pitch he was taking his eyes off the mitt and looking at his feet and then looking for the mitt during his release. Once he started to keep his eyes on the target he started throwing strikes. The first batter (Cales) hit a soft ground ball to second base. Jackson charged the ball but the fast runner beat the throw. Henson struck out the next batter. The next batter was hit by a pitch and the next Reds batter (Hester) singled to the right side and drove in Cales for an RBI. Hester was later caught stealing on a great throw from Clay Phillips. The third base runner scored on the throw to second. The next two batters (Wheeler, Ellison) were hit by pitches. Henson struck on the last batter to end the inning. Henson struck out 2 in the inning Cubs 0 Reds 2 In the Cubs first inning, Logan Hilton led off the game with a walk. Blake Ownbey walked and Jackson Bell was hit-by-a-pitch. Clay Phillips followed and was hit by a pitch. Paxton Bennett walked and Drew Guffey was hit by a pitch. Henson Gibbs singled to pick up an RBI and Trey Hasty walked to end the inning on the five-run rule. Logan Hilton, Blake Ownbey, Jackson Bell, Clay Phillips, Paxton Bennett each scored in the inning. Henson Gibbs got a base hit in the inning, Cubs 5 Reds 2 In the Reds second inning, Henson struck out the first batter of the inning and walked the second batter (Ryan). Ryan advanced to third on stolen bases. Henson struck out the third batter for the second out. The next batter (Cales) walked and advanced to second on a stolen base. Holsomback, their third baseman, lined a ball to left center to score two runs. Paxton Bennett made another great play in center field to get to the ball back to Blake, but we were unable to get the second runner at the plate. Hester singled and Henson struck out their last batter of the inning. Henson struck out 3 in the inning Cubs 5 Reds 5 In the Cubs second, Chip Brown and Dakota Ware led off the inning with walks. Chip was caught stealing at third base for the first out of the inning. Logan Hilton singled to left to pick up an RBI and to score Dakota Ware. Dakota's run meant the difference between Henson picking up his first win or gaining a no-decision. Blake hit into a fielder's choice to remove Logan. Jackson then singled. The inning ended on a strike out. Dakota Ware scored in the inning Logan Hilton and Jackson Bell singled in the inning. Cubs 6 Reds 5 Logan Hilton went in to pitch in the third inning and after walking the first batter, Logan struck out the next three to end the Reds third inning.
