Westside Cubs vs. Varnell Rockhounds

The Varnell game was probably our best game of the year, despite a very shaky start.  Each and every player on the team contributed to the win and each of the coaches was very proud of the game we played.  The Varnell coach kept asking "Have you guys played like this all year" and "Have your boys hit like this all year".  While we may have been a little overly aggressive at the plate (swinging at bad pitches), the extra work in the batting cage is really starting to pay-off.

The coaches were almost excited as Chip Brown, as he got his first base hit of the year.  He was so excited when he got to first base that Steve had to settle him down.  Chip could not understand why Steve would not loan him his cell phone to call his grandparents from the first base bag, but I'm sure they got the call after the game.

We missed Garrett Kelly for the game, who was on injured reserve, but Dakota Ware did a fine job in filling the left field position with two sparkling plays in getting the ball back to the infield quickly, saving us a couple of runs.  Garrett came out to support his team mates, but was too sick to play.

At the start of the game, during the top of the first, the Rockhounds rocked us for 5-runs and the inning was called because of the five-run rule.  The Rockhounds scored all their runs on three walks and only two base hits.

During the Cubs half of the first, Logan Hilton led off the game with a home run to right center.  Ethan Hayes followed with a walk and was driven in on the 2nd Home Run of the inning by Clay Phillips.  Clay crushed the ball again and we again asked that the ball be replaced because all of the bounce had been knocked out of it.  The inning ended with the Cubs trailing 5-3 with Logan Hilton, Ethan Hayes, and Clay Phillips each scoring runs.

The Cubs held firm in the 2nd with Logan surrendering a walk and three strike outs.

In the Cubs half of the second, we scored 5 runs and the inning was called because of the five-run rule.  Jackson Bell got a walk and was moved to second on Chip's base hit.  Logan Hilton, Blake Ownbey, and Drew Guffey each singled with Logan and Blake each picking up an RBI.  Drew scored on a daring steal of home to end the inning due to the five-run rule, giving Ethan Hayes an RBI.  Jackson bell, Chip Brown, Logan Hilton, Blake Ownbey, and Drew Guffey each scored in the second inning. Cubs 8 - Rockhounds 5

In the Rockhounds third inning, Logan walked the first batter and the batter was nailed by Clay Phillips, when he tried to steal second.  Blake Ownbey made a superb diving catch and landed on his glove and the base runner slid into the tag,  Logan struck out the next batter and walked the next batter.  Clay Phillips again made a great throw to catch the runner stealing in a play that wasn't even close.  The inning ended on the caught stealing play which ignited the Cubs players.

In the Cubs third, Ethan Hayes led off with a walk, Clay Phillips walked, and Ethan Neal walked.  Each eventually scored on stolen bases.  Chip Brown fought back from an 0-2 count to get a walk to load the bases.  Logan Hilton doubled to left field to clear the bases.  Logan was caught stealing home to end the inning. Ethan Hayes, Clay Phillips , Ethan Neal, and Chip Brown each scored in the inning. Cubs 12 - Rockhounds 5.

Jackson came in to pitch in the top of the fourth shutting down the Rockhounds, striking out three, allowing one run, and picking up his second save of the year.
